AMRAVATI: In a rather strange way to register protest, a group of about seven men lowered themselves into a well in Anjangaon Surji town in Amravati district on Monday evening. According to details, there is an old well in Aathawadi Bazar on Taterkheda road. On Monday, a group of youths belonging to Prahar, a social organisation promoted by a local MLA Bachchu Kadu, raised slogans against the Swabhiman scheme of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. As a mark of protest, seven members of the group entered the well and demanded the immediate scrapping of the scheme.
At present, there is a 12-hour power cut in the rural parts of the district. The protestors claimed that the farmers don’t use water pumps during monsoons for irrigation purposes.
They also demanded that the MSEDCL should charge Rs 100 per month per horse power of the pump installed in the field) instead of charging a lump sum amount annually. The agitators also called up on other farmers to join their campaign. When contacted, MSEDCL executive engineer Vinod Betharia informed that the notice period to pay power bills has been extended to October 31 and is to be paid in ten installments. However, Betharia said, since it was a policy decision, it was for the government to decide whether or not to scrap the scheme.
